Psychological thriller is one of the many sub-genres that fall under the 'thriller' category. A psychological thriller is different to a normal thriller in that it centres around the mental states of the protagonist, and sometimes also the surrounding characters, and mixes this element with mystery and drama, as well as incorporating traits typical of a thriller.

The crux of the suspense in a psychological thriller is often built on character's using mind games to deceive one another, or trying to slowly destroy their enemies' mental state.

Themes associated with psychological thrillers often include perceptions of reality, identity and death.

examples of psychological thrillers include Shutter Island, The Prestige and Inception.
