Martin Scorsese's 2006 crime thriller 'The Departed' is an adaptation/remake of Hong Kong film 'Internal Affairs'. Rewritten by William Monahan, this film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson and Mark Wahlberg.
The film is set in Boston, where an Irish mob boss named 'Frank Costello' (Nicholson) plants Colin Sullivan (Damon) as a mole within the state police (these characters are tenuously based on infamous gangster Whitey Bulger and corrupt FBI agent John Connolly, to whom he grew up with). Whilst the police simultaneously plant undercover cop William Costigan (DiCaprio) within Costello's gang. When both sides realise there's a mole in each team, each man tries to identify the other before their own cover is blown.
It won a multitude of awards, including 4 academy awards for Best Picture, Best Director (Scorsese), Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Editing. Mark Wahlberg also received a nomination for best supporting actor.
